New Orleans area business leaders targeting advanced manufacturing opportunities

Regional business leaders are setting their sights in the year ahead on developing and growing local opportunities in advanced manufacturing, an industry that could employ skilled and well-paid workers.

That was the takeaway Monday from Greater New Orleans Inc.’s annual meeting at the Hyatt Regency hotel. The regional economic development group’s incoming chairwoman, Tara Hernandez, told more than 1,000 business leaders and city officials that the group’s efforts would include leveraging existing partnerships or entering new ones to create jobs in that sector.

Hernandez, president of JCH Development, a local real estate development firm that specializes in converting underutilized real estate into residential, commercial and mixed-use redevelopment projects, rattled off a few area employers that could help reach that objective, including Bollinger Shipyards, agricultural giant Monsanto and defense contractor Textron.

Harvard Team Wins 2016 Hines Competition with Vision for Redeveloping Midtown Atlanta

A team representing Harvard University has taken top honors in the 2016 ULI Hines Student Competition with its winning master plan proposal to transform a Midtown Atlanta site in a thriving, sustainable, mixed-use, walkable, and transit-accessible neighborhood. The Harvard team ousted another team from Harvard University, one from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and one from the University of Miami.

Tara Hernandez to Chair ULI’s 14th Annual Hines Student Competition for 2016

The Urban Land Institute (ULI) has announced the selection of an area in Atlanta's Midtown neighborhood as the study site in the 14th annual ULI Hines Student Competition. The ideas competition provides both full- and part-time graduate-level student teams the opportunity to devise a comprehensive design and development program for parts of a real, large-scale site. The team with the winning proposal, which will be selected in April, will receive $50,000.

The national retailers opening in the new Magnolia Marketplace on South Claiborne Avenue are familiar names, often bunched together in box stores and shopping centers across the United States.

But local developers and public officials said Friday (March 13) that bringing those retailers into the city of New Orleans for the first time demanded a decade of work — carving out land from a former public housing development, getting snubbed by national retailers in the early years after Hurricane Katrina and dealing with financing problems that nearly derailed the plans.

Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu joined representatives from Stirling Properties and JCH Development, and local officials to celebrate the start of construction on Magnolia Marketplace, a $24.4 million shopping center that will fill a retail gap in the heart of Central City along the Claiborne Avenue corridor and create more than 200 full-time jobs.

"Magnolia Marketplace is further proof that New Orleans is on a retail roll," said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. "This project represents economic growth, jobs and opportunities and more retail options for an underserved community. Projects like this are why people are looking at New Orleans as a model for economic revival and urban renewal."

Stirling Properties and JCH Development Complete Acquisition for Land to Develop Shopping Center in New Orleans

Stirling Properties and JCH Development are pleased to announce the closing of the land acquisition and development financing for Magnolia Marketplace, a 106,000 square-foot shopping center located in New Orleans, LA at the intersection of South Claiborne Avenue and Toledano Street. First NBC Bank of New Orleans provided financing for the project.
